IHLENFELDT WINS SECOND LEG OF DRAKENSTEIN SUPER CYCLE SERIES
Monday, 10 May 2010 05:15

A very successful second leg of the Drakenstein Super Cycle Series was hosted at the Florida Farm Stall, just outside Wellington. This new series of events become very popular and it gives cyclists the opportunity to keep up their level of fitness during the winter months.

The Open (Juniors / Under 23 / Elites) race was over a distance of 124 km and young Stefan Ihlenfeldt of team Cape Town Market won the race convincingly. He was part of a 3-men breakaway group from the 28th km mark of the race. Ihlenfeldt, Moolman Welgemoed (Daikin GU) and Martin Wesserman (Tygerberg) worked well together to take the break until the end of the race.

The race also took the riders over the Botmanskloof Pass, a 6km climb just outside Hermon and this section of the race ripped the bunch apart. Over the pass, Anton Wynand (Cape Town Market), David Garrett (Daikin GU), Albertus Rust (TCS), Jos Le Roux (Club 100 MTN) and Cornelius Muller (Maties) found themselves in a group chasing the 3 leaders. At that moment the leaders had a time gap of approximately 36 seconds. Garrett and the Cape Town Market riders just played watchdog I this group as they each had riders in front.

With 13km to the finish it was sure that the 3 leaders would not be caught and they had a lead of 2 minutes 30 seconds. On one of the last climbs to the finish, with about 5 km to go, Ihlenfeldt made a great attempt to drop the other two. Only Wesserman could hold on to his wheel and Welgemoed was dropped. Ihlenfeldt then went on to convincingly won the sprint to the finish line, beating Wesserman with about 3 bike lengths. Junior rider Kyle Donachie also of team Cape Town Market crossed the finish as first junior of the race and in 7th overall position.

The Veterans 30-39 years was won by Daneel Liebenberg of Team Cycles Direct. He was followed by Neville Cragg (Club 100 MTN) in 2nd position and Christo Groenewald in 3rd of Helderberg.

In the Veterans 40 plus group Marius Nel finished first, and he was also the third overall veteran. Second was Christo Botha (Club 100 MTN) and third Jan Wiehman (New Balance).

Bradwin Daniels (Peco) won the under 16 race over 78km convincingly. The under 14 race was won by Jean Claude Jantjies (Yorkshire). The first under 12 rider was Gregory De Vink of City Cycling Club.

The next event in the series will be a 2-day tour on 12 & 13 June 2010.

On Saturday and Sunday (15 & 16 May 2010) the WP Road and Time Trial Championships will be decided. The venue is Windmeul Primary School (Agter Paarl). The first race on Saturday will start at 13h00.
